The Past, The Future and California

I grew up in Reno. I moved to Kansas in 1996 because my parents felt the need to be closer to family (in Illinois and Ohio) but not too close so we didn't have to spend any more time with them than we wanted too.

I have always had a special place in my heart for the west. I love the dessert, the dryness (even if it also comes with tons and tons of nose bleeds. OMG.). I have so many happy memories of being little in west. I hear that the place where I lived as a kid is totally built up now and it hardly looks the same. And I know that the people who live in my old house park their broke-ass trucks on the lawn (thank you Google Street View) so I can't help but feel like the image I have in my head and the place I would be going to if I went back would be radically different.

But for some reason I still feel drawn to go back. Maybe not to Reno, but out west - California specifically. And I have to say that I can't help but think that the universe is trying to tell me something because I know more people in California than I do here (almost). BFF Hilda is there, so is my high school BFF Newspaper Bitch. And another friend (who currently doesn't have a bloggy nickname) just got a job out there.

It's a conspiracy I tell you.

It's hard knowing so many people that are spread out so far across the country. It makes me feel old, and I am far too young to feel old.

I don't really know the point of this post other than to talk about how much I wish I could move out there where two of my best friends are living (seriously, what are the odds??) and, to sound like a 16 year old, live the life I would like to be living.

Honestly though, it all depends on how my Children's Mercy thing pans out. I had my interview, it went well (the question I messed up: tell us 2 of your strengths and weaknesses. My weaknesses answer: I'm a nervous talker and I'm sort of shy. *face palm*), I will know whether or not I got in on or before October 22. Please keep your fingers crossed for me. This Child Life business sounds like it's my calling.

Computers Suck - Watch out for Antivirus XP Pro

I have some bad news people. My laptop has come down with a virus ... which means that I will not be posting much this week or next week until my computer gets fixed.

It has been infected by a program calling itself Antivirus XP Pro (although it clearly is NOT an antivirus program) - it has taken over my desktop and thinks that it is totally awesome to open random internet windows with the website advertising the download.

Because I am TOTALLY going to download an antivirus program that infected my computer with a virus. That sounds like a completely awesome plan that can, in no way, backfire on me. Right?

Now I just have to find someone to fix it for me for free ... because I am still making not much money at my job, and I just don't want to spend a ton of money for someone to take the freaking thing off my machine. I tried to do it myself, and I did a good job, I know I deleted a bunch of the files that it needs to run because I got it to stop displaying the flashing "Warning Your Computer is Infected" sign on my desktop, and I even got it so that my antivirus would run a scan, where it would find the infected files, but then the virus would step in and freeze the program. I also now know how to unlock my task manger manually when the virus tries to stop me from ending all of its processes (take THAT antivirus xp pro!).

However, this must be the newest generation of the thing because none of the spyware websites I looked at had a listing that matched. BOO. Hence, I cannot get it off my machine on my own. BOO.

In other news, I finished my first ever knitting project! I will post pictures when my computer is healed.

Also, the apartment is still coming together. Boyfriend told me that I had to have everything cleaned up and put away by Tuesday night or else everything will be going into the storage unit. Which may not sound like a threat that I should worry about, but seeing as how I'm not sure where our storage unit IS (other than in the basement, I know that much), it presents a problem.

On a related note, two of my throw pillows have found homes in places other than my bedroom floor. However, the rest remain in a giant pillow mountain which has since been conquered by two tiny dogs in their quest to find the most comfortable place to sleep (other than my pillow, of course).

Oh Hai.

Well, a few things have happened since December ... the biggest and most obvious being that I moved last Saturday. It was, interesting, and painful, and also sad because a lot of my stuff was damaged/destroyed during the move.
  • One of the back legs of my fabulous vintage couch snapped clean off. We have determined that it happened in the moving truck because the fabulous couch was in one piece for sure when it when into the truck. (the fact that it had another couch, a temperpedic mattress topper and a dining room table on top of it may have had something to do with it).
    • Boyfriend's dad put some wood glue on it, c-clamped it for several hours, and then put a few screws in it and so far it has held. Granted, I've only sat on it for about 5 minutes, gently so that I wouldn't break it again, but the empty boxes that are sitting on it haven't broken it again so I'm hopeful that it will hold. Otherwise, I am going to cry.
  • My floor lamp (vintage) blew over in Boyfriend's driveway while they were loading his stuff in the U-Haul and got a hole poked in the shade. It's not terrible, but if anyone knows someone who can fix it, shoot me an email.
  • My vintage cheese plate shattered.
  • The stoneware insert of my crock pot was DESTROYED. My best guess is that it got dropped in the storage unit at some point. If anyone has one they don't want, or knows where I could get a new one, shoot me an email.
    • I am mad about this for three reasons:
    • 1. It was an impulse buy.
    • 2. It was only used once. By my friend so that she could make us cheese dip.
    • 3. I ended up not liking the dip. Crock Pot purchase = FAIL.
  • The cut glass for my tall dresser broke when Boyfriend moved the thing it was leaning against without looking to make sure that he wasn't going to break something by moving the thing. (the cut glass for my chest of drawers was lovingly broken by my little brother when we were moving my stuff into the storage unit in August. AWESOME).
  • The top of my chest of drawers is starting to come off ... probably because it's old (it was my mom's when she was a kid) and it's moved around more than any piece of furniture ever should be (I have never lived in a place for more than a year at a time).
  • While it didn't break while we were moving in, my bed frame (the one that was hand made by my dad using solid oak 2x4's [it was the heaviest bed EVER. I'm not kidding, it took about three MEN to move it] and was the bed that my parents have used since before they were married [read: over 20 years old]) bit the dust when I moved out of my house in August.
    • So my bed is on the floor, which isn't really a problem, I just don't like to have to look up at my nightstand. It's just weird.
Other than that everything made it in once piece/looking the way it did when it left the storage unit. None of Boyfriend's stuff was broken or maimed, but to be fair I think that's mostly due to the fact that he has about a fourth of the stuff that I have, ergo, less stuff to break.

The apartment is starting to really come together, the kitchen is almost totally together, I got all my books unpacked and on the shelf (and even have a few that I'm going to get rid of, aren't you proud of me?), the dinning room is still full of empty boxes that need to be broken down and put in the basement, the living room is done, Boyfriend's room is totally put together, the bathroom is finally done (all thanks to me),and the linen closet needs a little organizing but other than that is done.

The only thing that's left is my bedroom, which looks like it was hit with a bomb. A bomb of stuff. And boxes.

I have my furniture where I want it (except for the table that's sitting in the dinning room) and for the most part my closet is under control (I have ALWAYS wanted a walk-in closet and now I have one and I just don't know what to do with myself) and I have a growing pile of stuff I no longer care to move with me anymore. I think I have three boxes (maybe four) that still need to be unpacked.

Stay tuned for my next post: Attack of the Throw Pillows or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Accept the Fact that I Have WAY TOO MANY SETS OF THROW PILLOWS.

Moving

Don't worry ... not the blog. Just me.

Boyfriend and I talked about how I was feeling, then I talked to my parents about how they were feeling and then all four of us talked to each other about feeling in general. An hour and a very detailed budget later, everyone was starting to feel better about the whole "living in sin" thing that Boyfriend and I are getting ready to do together.

We went apartment hunting on Saturday and ended up giving our application to rent to the last place we went to check out (and almost didn't end up going to). I would tell you where but since I don't know you and there is a chance that you are some crazy serial murderer type person (just for the record: I give you the benefit of the doubt) I'm not going to. You will just have to settle for pictures after we move in.

It's an older complex, but the floor plans and are nice and big and open which means that we get a bigger apartment for less cash. We are going to be living in a downstairs apartment which means that we will have a tiny patio, which is fenced in, for small dogs to scamper around in when I am just too lazy tired to take them out on a long walk. We also will have a wood burning fireplace to have delightful fires in while we wait out the rest of the winter. I am 90% sure that we will also be having plenty of smores parties over the old open flame. Call me Email me if you are in or around Kansas and I will hook you up (provided, or course, that you are not a creepy serial murderer type person whose true intention is to roast me over the open flames).

We were informed by the very sweet office lady that we would probably know this week if we get the ok to move in or not. Keep your fingers crossed that we do ... otherwise I think that Boyfriend will lose his mind. If we do we will be moving in on January 10! It's so exciting! And now I have to start packing ... again (boo).
